The Volkswagen R32 had been powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine, but the new Golf R came equipped with a 2.O-liter inline-4 TSI engine, downsized to match the times that called for better fuel efficiency. Nonetheless, this smaller displacement 4-cylinder was a brute, posting maximum power output of 252 HP at 6000 rpm and 243.7 ft-lb of torque from 2400-5200 rpm, which was 6 HP and 7.9 ft-lb greater, respectively, than the prevfous R32 model. Fuel economy had also been improved by 20 percent at 29.0 MPG, thanks partly to the addition of a 6-speed DSG transmission.
